Mobile Internet Quality in Europe? How Mobile Operators perform in your country? Quality Benchmark – 2016

Mobile Internet Quality in Europe? How Mobile Operators perform in your country? Quality Benchmark – 2016

End of the year is usually very good time for Year to Year comparison and industry changes conclusions. Following this trend we prepared summary of Internet Speed Test conducted by users of Mobile Application – RFBENCHMARK in Europe in 2016. Not surprisingly obtained results show improved mobile network services performance, however there is still huge space for upswing.

For RFBENCHMARK team 2016 was also very good year looking on significant increase of active measurements worldwide. Taking this opportunity we would like to thank you for participation and active measurements. Each user of RFNECHMARK application helps in improving mobile and fixed network services by direct impact of service providers and increased customer quality of service awareness.

Below map presents results of Mobile Internet Quality per country including three most important mobile link parameters: Downlink Throughput, Uplink Throughput and Ping (Detailed Methodology Description can be found here!).

Displayed results presents averaged Key Performance Indicators for all mobile technologies 2G – GSM, 3G – WCDMA and LTE (4G). Such approach allows us to observe real quality of Mobile Internet Access per country base.

According to results presented on the above maps: Belgium, Lithuania, Denmark and Latvia are taking strong lead in terms of mobile Internet download speed in Europe. In case of upload speed, rank looks similar, however two countries: Hungary and Ireland also joined to the group of leaders. Internet traffic pattern is asymmetric – simply because we are usually downloading much more data (downlink) than uploading to network (uplink).

Ukraine is the weakest link. This country presents the worst parameters: ping, download and upload throughput. The main reason for this is a huge influence old technologies like 2G and 3G. LTE (4G) is in testing mode now. New technology rollout is announced on 2017. We expect that 2017 will bring improvement of mobile Internet quality in Ukraine.

Mobile operators are continuously developing their networks. One of the ways to achieve that is making available new technologies with higher throughputs, such LTE-Advanced. However in case of measurements performed by users, network saturation of new terminals supporting new technologies have huge influence. Replacement of user equipment is a long lasting process, culture and country specific. Despite of higher capabilities of service providers networks, Internet service quality will improve gradually . We expect to observe 2016 quality of service improvement trend in the next reports, impact of investments in new technologies and network infrastructure will become noticeable.

Situation would look completely different, if users would have access to latest terminals supporting latest technologies like LTE+ Advanced. In this case mobile Internet speed improvement would be immediate and significant.

Turkey is very good example of such rapid change. In first quarter 2016 Turkish operators were offering their services using only 2G and 3G technologies. 4G- LTE & LTE-Advanced was introduced in second quarter of 2016. Mobile Internet download speed increase 3 times comparing reports before and after change.
